Korezazu(石堂是一) was the nephew of Chounsai Tsunatoshi(長運斎綱俊), initially learning the art of swordsmithing from Tsunatoshi. Later, he succeeded as the seventh generation of the Ishidō family(石堂家) and adopted the name “Ishido Korezazu(石堂是一).” His artistic style can be broadly categorized into two types: the Bizen tradition(備前伝) and the Soshu tradition(相州伝). However, his true expertise lies in the Bizen tradition, which can be considered the signature technique of the Ishidō school. He left behind numerous masterpieces. In contrast to many Bizen tradition swordsmiths of the Shin-Shin-to period, who used the method of creating a hamon (temper line) by applying the nie (small martensite particles) and chōji (cloves) patterns, Issei employed the method of creating a hamon using the activity of the ji (steel body) itself, and this is where his innovative approach is evident.
