Yoshitsugu(吉次) is a son of Nobukuni Yoshisada(信国吉貞) who is the twelfth generation of Yamashiro Nobukuni(山城信国) and a descendant of Chikushi Nobukuni(筑紫信国). Kuroda Kanbei(黒田官兵衛) who is the military strategist of Toyotomi Hideyoshi established the Kuroda Clan(黒田藩) in Chikuzen(筑前) and named the area Fukuoka(福岡) after his hometown in Okayama(岡山). He invited the Nobukuni family to Fukuoka and designated them as exclusive swordsmiths(御留鍛冶) for the Kuroda family(黒田家), keeping the swords of Nobukuni a secret from other clans. Yoshitsugu is also famous as the father of Yoshikane(信国吉包), and his grandson, Nobukuni Shigekane(信国重包) was selected among swordsmiths from all over the country to create the ceremonial sword for the eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune(八代将軍徳川吉宗) at the Edo Hamagoten(江戸浜御殿). In recognition of his achievements, he received the prestigious Aoi Mon(葵紋) along with Masakiyo(主水正正清) and Ichinohira Yasuyo(一平安代) from Tokugawa Yoshimune. Yoshitsugu is the thirteenth generation of the Chikuzen Nobukuni family and carries on the legitimate lineage of the swordsmiths.
