  • The high skill of the three generations of Hizen swordsmiths, namely the first generation Tadayoshi (武蔵大掾忠廣, Mutsu Daijo Tadahiro), the second generation Omi Daijo Tadahiro(近江大掾忠廣), and the third generation Mutsu no Kami Tadayoshi(陸奥守忠吉). The greatness of the Hizen swords lies in the fact that they maintained their high-level swordsmithing techniques even as the generations passed.

This can be attributed not only to the individual skills of the swordsmiths but also to the high level of completeness as an industry, including sourcing raw materials, securing manpower, and managing logistics, among other factors.

Considering the number of swords produced, it can be assumed that the know-how of this industry had already been established by the time of the first and second generations. However, they continued to maintain this industry throughout the late Edo period to the Meiji era.

There are swordsmiths in various regions who have succeeded the legacy, but many of them produce ordinary works as the generations pass and move away from their masters' teachings. However, Tadayoshi and his successors, starting from the fourth generation, all continue to create swords in the distinctive style of Hizen, boasting high quality.

The eighth generation Tadayoshi is a renowned master who proudly adorns the lineage of the Tadayoshi family. Hashimoto Shinsaemon Tadayoshi, on the other hand, was a highly esteemed swordsmith within the Nabeshima domain and played a crucial role in the modernization of the domain. He was deeply involved in the production of cannons and warships and often demonstrated his swordsmithing skills in front of the domain lord. He was a trusted master who enjoyed the full confidence of the domain lord.
