  • HOTEI(布袋) was a Zen monk from China during the late Tang Dynasty. He was known for walking around town half-naked, exposing his potbelly, carrying a bag with daily necessities, and a staff. He would predict good and bad fortune as well as the weather. He was said to be an incarnation of Maitreya (Miroku) and is considered one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japan. He is also a subject for poetry and painting.
